Crisis Text Line Taking Action Against Mental Health

True Star And Street Level Youth Media Partner With Crisis Text Line

Crisis Text Line (CTL) is the first, national, free, 24/7 text hotline for young people in crisis. CTL is partnering with True Star and Street Level, two youth driven media organizations in order to bring light to the mental health issues Chicago youth face. Together, we’ll recruit teen volunteer counselors to join the CTL volunteer counselor network. We’ll train these ‘peer counselors’ in crisis training as well as the CTL platform and SMS best practices.

The need for this service is immense.  Youth who struggle with depression, bullying, substance abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and more often feel like they have no one to turn to and nowhere to go. Text offers a private, anonymous way to receive quality support.  Youth have the potential to get help as well as to become highly trained, effective providers of care through a medium that is second nature to them.

This project is a pilot intended to :

1. Help teens become aware of local mental health issues

2. Recruit and train a select group of Chicago-based teens in crisis and SMS best practices so they can join the CTL network

3. Allow Chicago-based teens to know that CTL is an available resources for teens in crisis.
