The National Veterans Art Museum will be running hands on workshops on digital media literacy and connected learning through the arts that relate to the NVAM collection at Youmedia sites around Chicago, focusing in under-served neighborhoods.
This project was inspired by our previously funded project NVAM Out Loud which launched a youth-directed, youth-facing website and blog which evolved to become the NVAM platform for working in the open and developing dialogue about the role of teens and educational programming in the museum environment. Creative Community will expand the reach of our audience and utilize digital media and online learning tools to create dynamic learning experiences inspired by our permanent collection.
Creative Community workshops utilize state of the art resources through CPL Youmedia sites: reaching the youth where they are, employing digital resources, art based and creative expression to invite youth of all backgrounds to participate fully in the program. Youmedia excels as a partner in promoting equitable access through their established role as a provider access to internet and computers for teens i communities around Chicago. By introducing multiple modalities of learning and reinforcing the value of all of these modes in dialogue, youth can learn and make connections through the learning strategies that work best for them. In addition to onsite learning, the skills being taught through Creative Community workshops can be replicated and built upon off site, allowing for the dissemination of 21st century connected learning.
